The coronavirus pandemic has brought new challenges, fears, and concerns about our lives and futures, not just at home but also abroad. Our coping mechanisms might suddenly seem sadly inadequate to this new enemy. There are still few answers and many unknowns, and with so much uncertainty around the globe, people are struggling with fear, anxiety, and immense amounts of stress. Could hypnosis to boost immunity be the answer?  

Protecting Your Health 

Coronavirus poses a serious threat to our physical wellbeing. While the virus causes only mild symptoms in most who have it, about one out of six people can develop serious illness, including difficulty breathing and secondary infections, according to the WHO.  

The fears and worries surrounding the virus can lead to chronic, toxic stress, which can dampen our immune response and lead to further risks to our health. This is exactly the type of situation in which hypnosis to boost immunity can be beneficial. 

In a typical stress response, the emotional center of the brain, the amygdala, interprets the information and sends the data to the hypothalamus, which acts as the command center. The hypothalamus sends signals to the rest of the body through the nervous system, ensuring that the body has plenty of blood, oxygen, and energy to make an escape or fight back against the threat. Once the threat is gone, the parasympathetic nervous system calms the body back down to its normal resting state.  

When you are living in a state of constant stress, the parasympathetic nervous system does not engage. The stress response stays activated. Your hormone levels become imbalanced, and your appetite stays high to keep your energy stable. Chronic stress can lead to an increased risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke.

Chronic stress also takes a heavy toll on your immune system. A review of nearly 300 studies found that people who were stressed for periods from a few days to years experienced serious declines in immune function. As stress continued over time, immunity declined even further. Chronic stress is not inevitable. You can use hypnosis for a stronger immune system to overcome it. 

The risk of stress-related immune damage is reportedly most severe in people who were already compromised, such as older people or those who suffered from chronic health problems. These are the same groups of people who are at a high risk of infection and serious illness from COVID-19.

In ordinary circumstances, our routines go unnoticed by us because our subconscious takes over the driver’s seat. This leaves our conscious brain free for other tasks. Now, however, our routine is anything but ordinary. Because the tasks have not yet been encoded in the subconscious, we have to think through everything before we do it. These bad habits can be blamed on the conservation of mental energy. Scientists call it the “default mode network” or DMN. Laypeople often call it “autopilot.” Your subconscious essentially takes over or switches into autopilot mode so that you can continue with necessary tasks more efficiently and without wasting excess mental energy.  

While the default mode network has obvious benefits, it can keep you tied to unhealthy and potentially dangerous habits. Hypnosis can help you kick those bad habits. Research suggests that hypnosis can alter neural activity and increase connectivity between various parts of the brain. These changes are associated with the heightened attention and emotional control associated with hypnosis. Some experts also theorize that it may alter the DMN. 

You can use hypnosis for immunity to overcome the habits that are holding you back and develop healthier new habits. Breaking bad habits requires more than just willpower. Bad habits are deeply ingrained in your subconscious, and right now, few of us have the mental energy needed to end them. Using hypnosis to shed bad habits allows you to overwrite the subconscious code that keeps you doing the things you know are bad for you.
