One Swiss study found that study participants who listened to an audiotape recording using hypnosis for insomnia were able to fall asleep faster and spend significantly more time in a deeper sleep state than those who did not use the hypnosis audio. This study did not rely solely on self-reports but used measurements of brain-wave activity to determine how deeply the study participants were sleeping. Another study divided participants into three groups. The group that used hypnotherapy for insomnia fell asleep faster than the placebo group and the group that used stimulus control.

Hypnosis can also help with certain types of sleep disorders, such as night terrors, nightmares, sleepwalking, and teeth grinding. Study participants who completed hypnotherapy had great improvement in parasomnia events or no events after a month of treatment. The study participants continued enjoying improvements at 18-month and 5-year follow-ups.
